Keeping crafting simple

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Crafting is a lot of fun for kids and adults. It’s always rewarding to see a work of art that you have created, even if you don’t believe you have a lot of talent to create it. The reason why children love craft projects so much is because it allows them to explore their creativity, which is essential in developing their personalities. Crafting teaches children wonderful skills like patience, hand-eye coordination, how to follow instructions, and listening skills.

To help your kids come up with some fun crafting projects, try keeping crafting simple. Trying to make the crafting projects too complex will be frustrating for kids; sometimes they may even frustrate you. Here are some essential supplies you need in order to get started with crafts for kids:

  • Extra fabric
  • Buttons
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Paper
  • Feathers
  • Yarn
  • Lace
  • Beads
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Glitter
  • Stickers
  • Markers
  • Cotton Balls
  • Paint

You can purchase kid crafting books to help you come up with fun ideas for each age but it’s a good idea to let your kids come up with their own ideas. Try handing your child a large notebook full of empty paper and watch their creativity grow as they come up with different things to put on the paper.

An easy crafting project for kids is to teach them how to create collages. Using old magazines, pictures, and other things your children can create fun things like decorating garbage cans, scrapbooking pages, photo albums, and other fun things. It’s exciting to watch your child’s creativity expand as they look into their minds to come up with unique things to create.

Teach your kids necessary counting skills by showing them how to take boxes from your home and turn them into a unique craft. Write a number on the outside of each box and then slit a hole in the top of the box where your kids can insert things into the box. For each box come up with a theme that your kids will follow when they are looking for pictures to insert into the box. Now since each box has a number, find matching items for boxes that require them to insert more than one item in the box. This helps to teach them how to count and it also teaches reasoning skills.

Jewelry making is a lot of fun for kids because they love to display what they have created. Using beads you can make necklaces, bracelets, and other fun jewelry items to wear. As they catch onto jewelry making, you can challenge them a little more with harder things like purses and bags. Just make sure you know your child’s skill level and choose a craft that will challenge them but won’t cause them to get frustrated and upset.

Picture making is always fun for children. Grab some finger paint and let them go to town on a blank sheet of paper. You can also try using ink pads to have them create fun fingerprint pictures and other things. Offer help on choosing things to paint or create like their favorite animals, trees, a rainbow, etc. This will spark their creativity and help them get on the right track with the things that they can and would like to create with paint and other items.

There are literally thousands of crafts out there that you can create with your kids. Have a large crafting box available for your kids to dig through and find things that they would like to create.  A box of fabric and other supplies is always nice, especially when you don’t know what to do with all your scrap fabric as your kids can create unique things.

Getting ready for woodworking crafts

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Would you like to learn how to make creative woodworking crafts to share with your loved ones or to add a little character to your home? You can easily create a number of unique woodworking crafts that your kids can sit down and do with you in just a few minutes. Woodworking teaches children valuable skills like problem solving, coordination, and patience. Depending upon how technical you want to get with your woodworking projects, you will need a few minutes or a few hours to create one of a kind woodworking projects. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Create a space
Before you can start creating a nice woodworking craft, you need to clear a space in your home for it. A table can help you lay out the materials and it will make it much easier for you to glue and hold materials. For younger kids, a table is a necessity as it will help them easily work on crafts. Make sure you have all the supplies necessary to get started with your fun woodworking projects. As you are preparing the room for woodworking projects, be sure to pick a room that has a window so you can vent any fumes from painting or lacquering the wood. It also helps to have a window to vent out sawdust as well. Take an inventory of all the tools that you have so you know what supplies you need to purchase for the woodworking projects.

Pick easy projects
It is important to research several different types of projects to work with, especially if you are trying to teach your kids how to do some woodworking projects. You need to use easy projects for kids that only require glue or minimal hammering as it can be dangerous for them to work with hammers and nails. Keep in mind that most kids do not have patience to work on projects for several hours so try to keep the entire project under 30 minutes if you want to keep their interest or you will end up finishing their projects on your own. As your kids get older they will most likely get excited about doing bigger projects as they help to challenge their abilities more. Talk to your kids before you get started and get a feel for what type of projects they want to create.

Experiment
Before you start teaching your children how to do woodworking projects, it is a wise idea to try and create a few projects on your own. Experimenting with a few different woodworking crafts will allow you to easily teach them to your children. Beginners may find woodworking extremely difficult and if you aren’t providing them with helpful advice and support, it may be challenging for them to get the hang of it and they won’t be able to create the craft without a little bit of frustration.

A great way to understand how to start woodworking is to take a class. This way you can see a step-by-step guide on how to create a nice woodworking project and it will be much easier for you not only to create it but to teach it to your children.

Woodworking is a great craft activity for your children and for yourself. Many people find woodworking to be extremely rewarding as you are able to create unique things for your home like planter boxes, fruit boxes and holders, and many other fun things. The other great thing about woodworking is that you can stain the wood or paint the wood to create a completely new design as the wood starts to age and you are ready to spruce it up again.

Some fun things to do with the paint include using themes for the different pumpkins. This will make your garbage can unique and it helps you to start to explore your creative side again and come up with some unique things to share.

Experimenting with crafting

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

When it comes to crafting you don’t have to do the same thing over and over again to help your children’s cognitive processes grow and develop. It is important for you to take time to research other crafting ideas in order to challenge your children and to avoiding hearing them say “I don’t want to do this, it’s boring.” Hanging onto all those pieces of scrap paper and fabric will come in handy when you are doing crafting projects as your children have a chance to allow their creative mind to run wild.

Here are some of the items you will need to have ready when you are crafting with kids:

  • Safety scissors
  • Colored pencils, crayons, markers
  • Stickers
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Cardstock and other paper
  • Scrap fabric
  • Buttons, wiggly eyes, and other materials to decorate crafts
  • Stickers, glitter, and other decorative items

There are literally hundreds of crafts you can make with your kids that allow them to experiment with their creativity and provide you with a chance to have some structured play time in between all the other things your kids may be involved in. Using newspapers, magazines, and other things you can create fun collages with your kids that you can use to create greeting cards, decorate trash cans, or create photo albums. Even using boxes in your home like cereal boxes, diaper boxes, and toothpaste boxes can allow you to come up with some interesting crafting objects that are fun for kids.

Here are some fun crafts you can easily create with your kids:

Mail Carriers
A fun and easy craft for kids is to create a mail carrier. Using construction paper, scissors, old shoeboxes, and contact paper your kids can create a fun mail carrier to sort different shapes and to work on their counting skills. Use the construction paper to cut out a variety of different shapes like squares, circles, and triangles. After you have all the shapes cut out you will need to cover them with contact paper, this will make them a little more sturdy so they will last longer. On each shoe box tape one of the shapes on the outside so you can easily identify which shape goes into which box. Place the shoe boxes randomly throughout your family room or kitchen and have your child pretend to be a mail carrier and deliver all of the extra shapes to their correct boxes.

Popsicle Painting
Kids of all age will have a lot of fun with popsicle painting. Freeze a tray of popsicles with just plain water. Once they are frozen, give them a chance to melt for a minute or two and then sprinkle some Kool-Aid over a piece of paper. Once the powder is on the paper take the popsicle and rub it all over the paper. This will make a unique painting, plus your kids will enjoy licking the popsicle with the tasty Kool-Aid on it.

Wax Paper Art
Instead of melting crayons to make a unique painting on wax paper, find some colorful leaves to create unique pictures. Take your kids out and pick some colorful leaves off the tree you will then need the following supplies:

  • Wax paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Food coloring or liquid tempra paint
  • Glue

Mix the glue with the food coloring or liquid tempra paint until you have a bright color. Add a small amount of water to thin the mixture a little so it’s easier to work with. Now you will cut two pieces of wax paper and then paint one side of each piece with the glue mixture. Stick the leaves onto the glue paper until it is in place and then place the second piece of wax paper on top of the leave and press them together. Once it has dried, make a hole in the top with a hole punch and then you can hang it in your home with some string.

Creating your own t-shirt

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

A fun craft you can create in just a few minutes is to create your own t-shirt. Kids love to create their own t-shirts, especially for birthday parties and other gatherings with their friends when they need a fun activity to do.

It is easier than ever to create your own t-shirt as you don’t just need to stick to tie-dye shirts anymore. Now you can use software to design own t-shirt and print it out onto an easy iron-on transfer patch. There are numerous iron on t-shirt transfer kits you can purchase at your local office supply store along with the paper.

You will need to find a blank t-shirt to use in order to create your own t-shirt design. Some other tools you will need include the following:

  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • A dry pillow cover
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Transfer paper
  • White paper

In order to create your own t-shirt, you will need to come up with a basic design for the shirt. You have the option of creating one using software or you can create one with Photoshop or another program as long as you are able to print it out onto the iron on transfer. For your first t-shirt you should stick with something that is basic and doesn’t have too many colors to it. As you gain more practice with the t-shirts you can start to add text to your images along with a few other things that will allow you to easily start to create unique shirts.

When you are creating t-shirts, keep in mind what color the t-shirt is. When you add color to your images, they may not be able to transfer through the way you had hoped. You also need to be careful about grouping images and words together too closely. If you do this, it will be difficult for you to read the text and to decipher the image that you have transferred to the t-shirt.

One thing to remember when you are printing t-shirts is the way you print the image. You need to mirror the image in order for it to print out correctly on the t-shirt so be sure that you do this right before you iron on the transfer paper to the t-shirt or the image will come out backwards. After the image has been printed out onto the paper you will need to trim around it. Then you want to heat your iron until it is hot. Place the transfer paper with the printed image onto your t-shirt and then iron it onto the t-shirt for about 5 minutes in order to successfully transfer the image to the t-shirt. Make sure the t-shirt is smooth and there are no wrinkles before you iron on the image. Use the pillowcase to make sure the t-shirt is smooth by placing it on top of the shirt and ironing it. This will allow you to smooth out the shirt so you don’t end up with a wrinkled image.

Once the image has been successfully transferred, you need to wait until the shirt has had a chance to cool down before you try and remove the paper from it. The shirt should sit for about 10 minutes in order for you to remove the paper and then start wearing your new t-shirt around.

It is best to start with some old t-shirts before you start making professional shirts that you plan to wear around. It can take a few tries to perfect the process of properly making your own t-shirt so be sure to allow yourself plenty of room for mistakes and errors in the beginning.

Creating a profession with your crafting skills

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Do you have the ability to create unique things with your crafting abilities? If you have a knack for crafting, you can easily turn it into a great profession and make some extra money from your home.

Some of the most popular crafting professions include jewelry making, painting pictures, scrapbooking, and sewing clothing. To determine if you can make money with your crafting projects, start by telling your friends and family about your crafting abilities. As they start to recognize your crafting abilities, you will be able to see if people like your crafts and then you can branch out and start marketing yourself.

A great place to start is with eBay and Craigslist. These sites allow you to advertise your crafting projects for next to nothing. eBay does charge a fee for insertion of your crafting projects whereas Craigslist is free. You should also look into other websites that allow you to insert your crafting projects so you can advertise for free. Many newspapers have online classified ads where you can insert your crafting projects for free but they will charge you if you put them in the printed version of the paper.

Create your own website or blog where you can advertise your crafting projects. Depending upon how successful your business is becoming you may want to consider adding a shopping cart to your website. This will allow customers to pay online so you don’t end up losing money on your crafting projects while you wait for people to eventually pay you.

Consider branching out if you like to craft projects. You should purchase a few crafting books and teach yourself some new crafting skills in order to branch out to your customers and become marketable to them. Make sure you fully understand how to do all of these new crafting projects before you start marketing them on your website or you may end up disappointing some of your customers.

A great way to find out how you can make money with crafting projects is to do a Google search and also search on eBay to find out what type of crafting projects are popular right now. Many new parents are always on the hunt for cute baby announcements and other things that they can hang up in their child’s room.

If you have great computer skills, you can easily start creating unique online projects for people. Online scrapbooks are in high demand right now because people love sharing them with their loved ones. You will want to design some unique templates to start inserting pictures into and you will need to have the ability to personalize the scrapbook pages with quotes from the buyer. Make the templates easy to use in case they want to edit them in the future and make them easy to print out. A lot of people offer printing services as well to provide customers with a hard copy of their scrapbooks. This is a great option to offer, just make sure you have a high quality printer or consider working with a printing company in order to offer this additional service to your customers.

Another way to attract customers is to create a blog and send out newsletters. Offer crafting advice to your customers as this will help to draw them in and possibly attract new customers. A blog is a great way to drive more traffic to your website and to build stronger relationships with your customers. It is important to create a website and to establish yourself as an LLC in order to declare your business a separate and legal entity. It will also protect you from liability in the event that a customer tires to sure your company.

Create your own cards

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

There are a number of greeting cards out there but many of them may not offer the message you are searching for. A great option you have is to create your own greeting cards to share with your loved ones. Greeting cards are easy to create, here are a few tips to help you get started and create unique greeting cards.

Tip # 1 – Find the right materials
In order to create the right type of greeting card, you need to consider the materials you have at hand. While you may have a desire to use fabric, you need to consider how bulky it may make the card. Opt for thinner fabrics that don’t make the card too bulky. Here are a few materials that will make the greeting card stand out:

  • Glitter
  • Water color
  • Acrylic paint
  • Ribbon
  • Cookie cutters
  • Glue
  • Photographs

Tip # 2 – Collages
One of the easiest ways to make nice greeting cards is to create collages. Hunt through magazines to find interesting or funny pictures to add to your greeting card. They need to match the theme you are creating for the greeting card. Old wrapping paper can work great when you are making a birthday greeting card. Use the wrapping paper to become the background image for the greeting card and then use a bunch of pictures throughout the past year that will easily display fun events that have happened to the recipient of the card from the past year. This will make the card personal to them and a bit more engaging and entertaining for them.

Tip # 3 – Glitter and glue
A great way to decorate greeting cards is to use glitter and glue. Paint a thin layer of glue over the entire card and then sprinkle glitter all over the glue. Allow the card to dry and then place a book on top of it to prevent it from curling. It helps to use cardstock because it doesn’t curl as much as thinner paper will so you don’t need to worry about it falling apart. Use glitter to spell out the persons name and to make the card stand out nicely.

Tip # 4 – Stamps, Paint, and Embossing

For a colorful greeting card, try using stamps, paint, and embossing. You will need to use a thick coat of paint on the paper to cover it. Watercolor is a fun paint to use but you can also use acrylic paint on the card. Once you have layered the paper with paint you need to take a brush and draw out a shape in the paint. This can be something like a Christmas tree, birthday gift, pumpkin, etc. The image should fit to occasion. Once you have drawn out the image you need to use butter paper to place on the card to create a unique card.

Stamps are a lot of fun and you can find a number of different stamps to use. One fun thing you can do is have your kids create greeting cards using stamp pads and their fingers. Have them come up with fun designs to add on the card and then create the card using their finger prints in several rows until they create the design. This is fun for kids and it’s always fun for the gift recipients.

When you are working on greeting cards for the first time, avoid over-doing it. Sometimes people get highly involved in the design features and they add too many images and things to the card so its hard to even see the main picture you are focusing on and the message of the card.

Crafting for your health

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

One activity that is recommended for the young and old is crafting. Elderly people and young people can both use crafting to strengthen the neural connections in the brain allowing you to think clearer. Many people find that crafting provides them with sometime engaging and helps to provide some type of meaning to your life. When you are crafting, you are creating unique projects that you can be proud of. No matter what type of crafting you decide to get involved in, they can all help to strengthen your self-esteem as many depression suffers have found.

Here are a few popular crafts that you should consider trying:

  • Card making
  • Scrapbooking
  • Crocheting
  • Using molding clay to create cases and other things
  • Paper folding (creating flowers and other unique things)
  • Woodworking projects

With all the different colors and shapes in the world, it is easy to create unique crafts that you can be proud of. Take a look at some of the things you enjoy in the world and try to recreate them in your home. Perhaps you like flowers, try painting a flower with watercolors or you can even pick some flowers and create your own floral arrangements. An easy craft to create is a wreath. Purchase the main body of the wreath and you can then decorate it with a number of things. Depending upon the time of year it is, you can make interesting wreaths to take to the graveyard or to hang on your front door. Here is a simple wreath you can create for the Christmas season:

Using old soda cans, wash them and dry them, you will be using the top of the can to create a Christmas caroler. Now you will need some yarn or you can purchase some fake hair at your local craft store. Using acrylic paint, paint some eyes on the caroler and then paint the opening of the can red for the mouth. This will make it appear as if the soda can is singing like a caroler. Use a hot glue gun to glue the cans on the inside of the wreath. To get creative with your wreath, consider using some yellow cardstock paper to make some small songbooks for the carolers to sing from. Glue the books down in front of the cans so they don’t cover the faces of the carolers. Now decorate the wreath with some holly berries, garland along with some plastic musical notes. This is a fun way to make your wreath have a little bit of personality.

Another easy craft you can create is a centerpiece for your table. You can even make your own candles to go inside the centerpiece if you would like. Head outside and gather up some pinecones that you can use to construct a nice centerpiece. Purchase some fake flowers and leaves along with some wire that will create the body of the centerpiece. Now you will need to make a basic frame for your centerpiece and then start arranging the pinecones, flowers, and leaves around the frame. You will need a hot glue gun in order to secure the pinecones and other decorative elements in place. Fake flower arrangements can last for years and they make for wonderful gifts if you don’t know what to purchase someone for their birthday or a special occasion. As you practice and experiment with the centerpieces, you will be able to create several centerpieces and easily perfect them until you can even start your own at-home business and sell the centerpieces and earn a nice income.

Crafting for seniors

Friday, December 10th, 2010

As our bodies age, our minds tend to slip quickly. Seniors can help to prevent dementia and its symptoms by spending time doing crafting activities. Crafting helps to build strong neural connections in the brain and provides you with increased memory and better clarity. Many seniors enjoy crafting projects as it provides them with something entertaining to do. Senior centers often offer crafting projects throughout the week to help strengthen the neural connections in the brain and to prevent seniors from getting bored.

If your senior parents seem like they are getting bored, they probably just need some fun activities in their life. A lot of seniors will volunteer their services in social groups, but this isn’t always possible for some seniors that have limited mobility. To come up with some fun crafting projects for your senior loved ones, sit down with them and discuss some of the things they like to do. They may like to do cross-stitching, but this isn’t possible if they have arthritis and vision problems. Instead try crafting projects like making candles, creating a vase, crafting a photo album, making a blanket, and other easier craft projects for them.

To help seniors that have arthritis pain, purchase some arthritis gloves and have them wear them while they are crafting. These gloves help to prevent pain in the joints because they use the heat from the hands to put it back into the joints and prevent pain. This will make it easier for them to perform crafting projects like needlework.

Scrapbooking
This is an easy crafting project for seniors and it’s nice for them to look over pictures and remember these fun moments. Have them sort though the pictures and organize them on the pages. For some of the pages, have them put together a unique collage. Collage pages are also fun to separate different sections of the scrapbook like to announce holidays or birthdays. Scrapbooking is easy on the hands so it won’t cause them a lot of pain. Paper cutters are easier for seniors to use instead of scissors. Try to cut out other decorative items ahead of time so your loved one will only need to glue the pictures and decorative items to the page.

Ornaments
Many seniors have fun creating ornaments that they can share with their loved ones. Purchase some clear ornaments and then use different acrylic paint. Now you will squeeze a small amount of paint into each ornament and spin them around, this should create a unique design inside the ornament. Once the paint has dried, add another color to the ornament and repeat the process. It will make your ornament unique and it will stand out on the tree. You can also create unique ornaments by adding some tinsel to the inside of the ornaments. Add a small picture to the inside of each ornament and they will make wonderful gifts for the grandchildren.

Wreaths
An easy craft for seniors is to create wreaths. Depending upon the time of the year it is, take your senior loved one to the dollar store with you and shop around for unique items to add to the wreath. You can have them arrange the items on the wreath and attach them with a hot glue gun. Have your loved one wear gloves to prevent them from burning themselves with the hot glue. Wreaths are easy to make and they are wonderful decorations to take to the cemetery or to hang on the door. Purchase some metal stands to attach to the wreath if you plan to take it to the cemetery.
